Solar and Renewable Federal Tax Credit

2011 continues the residential Solar Federal Tax Credit first enacted in 2009.  The old program was capped at $2,000.  With the new one you can claim up to 30% of installation costs for a new system. Existing homes & new construction both qualify for this credit and it can be applied to both principal residences and second homes. Unfortunately rentals properties do not qualify at this time. The Solar Tax Credit is set to expire on December 31, 2016.

The way the tax credit works is that you would deduct from the taxes you owe up to 30% of the cost of the purchase and installation of a qualified solar system or energy upgrade. For those who do not have a tax liability, as of August 2011, we have new lease program offered by SunPower which allows you to deduct the 30% credit right up front. If you do not have a tax liability then this program is for you. You will save almost 50% off the cost of your new solar system and new will generate your own electricity for generations.
